Social Tuesdays: Salsa Bachata Kizomba (SBK) Latin Dance Night

On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, we have a guest instructor teaching a one hour Waacking workshop at our Social Tuesdays: SBK Latin Dance Night.

Waacking is a form of street dance that was created in the LGBT clubs of Los Angeles during the 1970s disco era. The style is typically done to 70s disco music and is mainly distinguishable by its rotational arm movements, posing and emphasis on expressiveness. We'll be running drills to help you improve your technique and gain skills, all while having fun! 

At the age of three, Talia started Spanish dancing. When she moved to Israel at the age of seven years, unable to find children’s Flamenco, she began what was called “Funky Jazz” classes. This led to her passion for Hip Hop; by the age of seventeen she was dancing professionally with the all-female Edmonton crew Fly Girlz. In 2010 Fly Girlz received third in the world at an international Hip Hop competition held in Las Vegas. Talia graduated with Honours from the Dance program at Victoria School of Performing Arts, upon graduation she auditioned and was accepted for the training program at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks in Calgary a year later. At Decidedly Jazz, Talia trained in all styles of dance including: Ballet, African, Tap and Jazz, but her true passion still lies with Hip Hop (specifically Waaking). Talia has trained in New York and Los Angeles and has studied under many legendary choreographers including Poppin Pete, Sho Tyme and Boogaloo Sam. Talia has been teaching throughout the City of Edmonton since 2009 and is continually training with Hip Hop artists from around the world. Furthermore, in 2021 Talia became certified as a Yoga Instructor and enjoys merging both worlds.

You do not need a partner for this workshop. The workshop will be friendly to all ages/levels with something for everyone. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing you can easily move in and clean indoor shoes (comfortable heels or flats).

After the workshop we will have a Salsa, Bachata, and Kizomba (SBK) afterparty. Join us for a fun dance night at this beautiful venue! 💃🏼🌮🕺

Cost:

Cover for the Social Tuesdays event is $5 early bird (advance purchase via eventbrite) or $10 at the door (cash only, paid at the bar), which includes both the dance lesson/workshop and social dancing.

Food/Drinks:

We encourage attendees to support the venue through food/drink purchases to ensure the night remains viable. Drinks can be ordered all night, food must be ordered by 10:45 pm.

Parking:

All our guests are eligible for $5 parking after 6:00 pm in Central Social Hall's parking lot (at the back). As you enter the venue, there is a QR code at the door which you can scan to register your vehicle.
