Portland Zouk & VMAC are excited to welcome Jerry Lai to Portland, now his home town!
This intensive program is designed to dive in depth to how our bodies work in relation to Brazilian Zouk. This is a progressive series that builds on information from previous hours, and therefore it is not possible to buy a one day pass. Additionally, Zoukers of ALL skill levels will highly benefit from this information, there is no leveled classes. We will learn, explore and grow together. Additionally, this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know Jerry and his philosophy surrounding Zouk as he settles into calling Portland his home base!
============= WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION =============
"He was so, so grounded.
She’s a flow queen.
I don’t know how, but they were so controlling but so comfortable!
DAMN. That was gooey.
How often do you hear friends describe their amazing dances, and you immediately go like, (perhaps with a sprinkle of jealousy) “I WANNA BE THAT!”
I definitely did.
In my frantic journey trying to be other people as a newer dancer, I would vacillate between heavy and light, slow and fast, tight and relaxed. Often overdoing it.
Over years, I saw the richness of the in-between… and how advanced dancers are often accessing the entire gradient. I stopped attaching negative or positive associations to these opposites. It’s a way of describing why and how everyone feels different. It is within this gradient that I stopped trying to be others, and found my own way of moving, This weekender is dedicated to the past me, to bring awareness to the subtleties of the in-between. There is a time and place for heavy, fast, noodly, and tight.
The Gradients Weekender explores the rich universe in-between opposing binaries. It is less about the moves or the steps, but the approach. It presents several binaries, attempting to cultivate awareness, shining the spotlight of awareness on qualitative parts of your dance. Bring awareness to where your movement tendencies are on the gradient, and intentionally expand your range to where you feel most authentic within that gradient.
While the intensive is open-level, movement experience or social-dancing exposure to head movement are highly recommended for the amount of body awareness required to maximize your benefit. There will be as much solo work as there is partner work."
