Influenced by Iberian, African, and Indigenous cultures. Bachata is a traditional genre of music & dance originating from the Dominican Republic, developed during a time of government and media censorship. Bachata once disparaged for its association with the โunsophisticatedโ, is now a Nostalgic keepsake for many Latin cultures.

As Dominican people migrated outside the Dominican Republic, the opportunity for Bachataโs commercialization would take the genre to new heights. Combining rhythmic elements of Bachata music with elements of Western music, Fusion genres would arise. Modern Bachata Dancing is influenced by elements in Salsa, ballroom, and tango.

A fusion style developed in Spain with an increasing following outside the Dominican Republic, this style focuses on body waves and isolations similar to Brazilian Zouk. Sensual Bachata dancing is often done with both Modern Bachata music and non-Bachata music that a DJ or producer remixed to include elements and instruments specific to Bachata music, such as the bongo drum.
