We're doing something special this week
If it's your first time attending an ATX Fusion event, we're offering free entry! So if there's a dance friend you've been trying to convince to check out Fusion, this is a great night to bring them along. We'd love to show dancers from other styles what Fusion has to offer!
At 8pm, ATX Fusion's own J. Colby Adams will teach a class on Fusion foundations, then Sterling Taylor and Katie Rose will step into the DJ booth from 9-11 with newbie friendly tunes!
SCHEDULE:
8pm: Fusion Foundations class w/ J. Colby Adams
9-10pm: DJ Sterling Taylor
10-11pm: DJ Katie Rose
PRICING: $10 before 8:30pm, $15 from 8:30pm onward (free for first time attendees). Both card and cash are accepted at the door.
CLASS TOPIC: Fusion Foundations
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
While each Fusion dancer draws from their own individual dance background, there are structural basics that facilitate better non-verbal dance communication, and there are ways of building deeper dance floor connections. In Fusion, we often don’t share the same dance ‘vocabulary’ as dancers with other backgrounds. Without this vocabulary, we rely on our dance connections and non-verbal communication almost entirely to co-create our experiences together.
We’ll talk about core aspects of how to find our way to surprising dance floor creations and shared musical flow states--dance frames, personal comfort, tone matching our partners, active listening in both roles, and how to step into the first dance with someone new.
Let’s get our chops up and be ready to make the most out of the Austin Fusion Festival coming up in November!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
J. Colby’s first partner dance love was Argentine Tango, where he learned his appreciation for dance principles. Eventually, he dabbled in teaching beginner lessons in tango. He has taught in various dance styles over the years, but since 2018, he’s been focused on Fusion. In his experience, having both an intellectual and visceral understanding of dance principles makes all sorts of moves available to us and increases our capacity to improvise, which in turn produces delightful surprises on the dance floor. He leans on his strong background of teaching martial arts when teaching any physical art, and while the skills in our dance classes are more about harmony than conflict, the classes still benefit from the methods.
